Social Media Etiquette Project

For the social media etiquette project, I chose the CEO of CrossFit's insensitive and racist tweets about George Floyd's death as well as about the COVID-19 pandemic. The tweet said "It's FLOYD-19." The CEO also stated that him and his company were not mourning George Floyd's death and that he had questions as to why people were protesting. These comments are blatantly racist and insensitive to post publicly on the internet. My definition of social media etiquette is to be aware of what you say on the internet before posting it as it can come off as offensive. The CEO also mocked COVID restrictions and questioned whether they really worked or not. This is extremely offensive to healthcare workers and the millions of people who passed away due to this horrible pandemic.
I also wanted to just add my personal perspective on this, my sister is a nurse and was a nurse during the pandemic and it was a very very stressful situation at the time for her and for all doctors, nurses, and every other healthcare worker not just in the States but around the world too. She as well as many healthcare workers had to work excruciatingly long hours and wear PPE to make sure they would not spread the pandemic any further or get it themselves. Whenever someone would say that COVID was not "real" or that "millions of people were not dying", it was offensive to me because I don't think people really understood the amount of work that healthcare workers do day in and day out especially in a pandemic and obviously still do to this day. A lot of people actually completely quit and stepped away from the medical field because of how stressful working in the healthcare department was for newer nurses and doctors who had just graduated and started working. No one was equipped at the time to deal with a horrific and traumatic pandemic such as this and comments, such as these, completely disregard the amount of work healthcare workers do every single day. So I think the CEO could have been more educated based on these facts. I feel like it is not hard to have basic human decency especially in horrific times like the pandemic was for the whole world.
Racism should never be a debate either, I have never understood why people make comments about someone else's race or ethnicity without thinking about how it might affect them, everyone should be accepting and caring towards others despite our differences. Despite George Floyd's past, he was still a person and I do not think that an officer in a position of power should have suffocated him to death. Police officers are supposed to protect us in society, not harm us in any way. I also want to emphasize that I do not think every single police officer would act like this but some still do and there needs to be change and it needs to be talked about more.
The CEO of CrossFit should have educated himself more on black communities and what healthcare workers do everyday and he should have thought about his offensive tweets and comments before sharing them on the internet. I also think that people do not understand that digital footprint exists, everyone has one and just because you delete something does not mean it's gone forever. People need to understand that words hurt and have meaning and being nice to others costs absolutely nothing.
